Which Mattress Toppers Are Best?
The addition of a layer of cushioning can make your bed more comfortable. It may help relieve pressure on joints. But which mattress toppers are the best?
Dr. Holliday-Bell recommends this organic alternative for those who want the supple support of memory foam, but prefer to stay clear of chemicals. It comes with an easy-to-clean cover and comes with various levels of firmness to suit most sleepers.
1. Sleep Innovations Gel Memory Topper
The topper is soft enough for most people to be comfortable with, but it’s not devoid of support. Our testers loved the way it conformed to their bodies, giving support in all the proper places. It is also a good fit for most mattresses however it can be a bit difficult to put the sheets on (read more about how to put on mattress toppers here). Its thick layer of memory foam is machine washed and naturally antibacterial. It has a quilted bamboo cover that is hypoallergenic and sustainably sourced. It was a favorite of our panelists, however it’s important to note that it does not have straps to help anchor the topper to your mattress as it can shift as you sleep.
The panelists who liked this topper also appreciated the fact that it helped ease back pain. It’s a great option for those who sleep heavier and find that a topper with an average depth of three to four inches can ease pressure on a sensitive area like shoulders and hips.
A two-inch layer of memory foam infused with copper wicks heat and promotes airflow for a cool night’s sleep. Our test participant Jaclyn found the topper to be firm enough to ease the pressure on her back, front, and side sleeping positions but not so firm that it felt uncomfortable. She also noticed a massive difference in the back pain she was experiencing and said that it “pretty almost disappeared overnight.” She was also impressed by the topper’s quietness even when placed on top of a spring mattress. The topper also prevents motion transfer, making it a good choice for couples who share beds.
2. Coop Home Goods Retreat
We love the plush feel of Coop Home Goods’ mattress toppers and when this spot-clean only version popped up in our research we knew it was a must to be included. It’s made of the brand’s crosscut microfiber and memory foam which is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for anyone looking to improve the quality of an existing mattress or re-energize the bed mattress topper in a dorm, guest room, or rental home. What makes this topper especially special is the inclusion of five body-zones that have different density zones, which helps shape and conform to your body’s unique shape and still provide sufficient support.
The cover of this mattress protector is made of 100 percent microfiber poly that has been brushed. It has a baffle box design that creates pockets that evenly distribute the fill. It also features four elastic straps at each corner to help keep the topper firmly placed on your mattress. The copper-infused memory absorbs heat from the body, keeping you cool during the night. It’s topped off with 2″ layer of ventilated memory for greater breathability.
The Retreat is a fantastic mattress topper for those who want a plush feeling. When Strategist writer Louise tried it, she noted that the topper quickly adjusted to her body shape and supported her in a way that made her feel supported and at ease. She typically overheats in the bed, but she discovered that the Retreat kept her cool. It did not move at all throughout the night. It comes in two different firmness options, and back, side and stomach sleepers will find it to be a good fit for their preferences.
3. Nolah Beds Luxury Firm Memory Foam Topper
There are plenty of options if you’re looking for a mattress topper. Some are designed to keep you cool or regulate your body temperature, while others offer a little more support or comfort. A feather mattress topper topper is an excellent way to upgrade the comfort of your mattress without spending much money. A memory foam mattress topper is a good option for most sleepers, but should you prefer the bouncy feel of an innerspring mattress think about a hybrid mattress that combines latex mattress topper with tiny nano-springs.
A more firm topper can help align your spine for side and back sleepers and relieve pressure in sensitive areas. Our test participant Julia was impressed with this four-inch topper by Tempur It is manufactured in the US and comes with an impressive 120-night trial. She found it helped her sleep better and was happy with the extra firm mattress topper comfort it offered her previous mattress. There was an off-gassing smell when she first opened it, but this went away after the next day.
Another option that’s firm is this one from Parachute which provides shredded foam that’s not as dense as traditional memory foam but still feels extremely comfortable. Lauren Levy, a Strategist contributor says it’s “much cheaper than a down topper” and has similar marshmallow softness. She liked sleeping on it, but would not recommend it for people who sleep in front because her torso was smashed in the top.
A topper made from natural wool fleece is hypoallergenic and soft. However it’s not as permeable as memory foam, and could make you feel warm at night. A cotton topper is also an option as it’s breathable and will keep you cool. Some fabrics are infused graphite or copper to keep your cool.
4. Sleep Innovations Gel Cooling Memory Foam Topper
This Puffy topper is a great budget option that provides a soft, gentle support that relieves pressure at an affordable price. It also comes with a range of thickness and density options, making it simple to find the ideal fit for your bed.
Lauren Levy, a Strategist contributor, was thrilled that this topper is “marshmallow-soft” and features a baffle-box construction that has pillow-like fiber-fill. It’s hypoallergenic and comes with a washable cover that will help you maintain the cleanliness in your mattress.
The 2″ layer of memory infused with copper is designed to promote airflow and help wick the body of moisture while you sleep. This allows you to remain cool. Levy discovered that it was very comfortable, even though it didn’t bounce as much as latex toppers. It’s ideal for people who sleep on their sides, backs, or stomachs, as well as for those who suffer from chronic pain.
Standard features include a 10-year warranty as well as free shipping and 10 years of warranty. This topper is also easy to clean. Simply spot-clean it and let it dry in the sun. You should not put it in a washer or dryer as this will void the warranty.
The Sleep Innovations Gel Cooling Memory Foam Topper is a great budget option for a soft and comfortable mattress. It offers moderate (5) firmness which makes it ideal for most sleepers, but particularly those who feel their mattresses are too firm. It also stops transfer of movement, which is essential for sleepers who are combination. It also relieves neck and shoulder discomfort, just like the Coop Home Goods Retreat topper. The only drawback of this topper is that it might not be as comfortable as polyfoam or latex and is therefore not the best for hot sleepers.
5. Nolah Beds Luxury Plush Memory Foam Topper
The Nolah Beds Luxury Plush Memory Foam Topper is an excellent option for back sleepers looking to soften their mattress as well as for side sleepers who want extra cushioning. This topper is also ideal for people with chronic pain as it eases pressure points. It is made in the USA from non-toxic materials, and is a great option for hot sleepers. It has a 2″ layer that is cleverly infused with copper foam that helps in promoting ventilation while providing support. It is covered of organic cotton that helps control moisture. The topper was discovered by our test subject Paige to be very effective at stopping motion transfer. It also provided substantial softness, without sacrificing any support. She noticed that the edges didn’t fully hug her mattress. If support for the edges is important to you, this may not be the right topper for you.
The topper is also easy to clean as it has a removable and washable cover. Additionally, it’s hypoallergenic and antibacterial to provide a healthy night’s rest. It also features five body zones to support different areas of the mattress. It also comes with a lifetime warranty and a 120-night trial which is a lot longer than the policies of competitors.
This is one of our cheaper options however it doesn’t sacrifice quality. It’s made with a blend of memory foam and latex which provides an exquisitely soft feel to any mattress. It features a more dense memory foam layer to offer extra comfort and promote the restful sleep. It’s not the best choice for stomach sleepers as it sinks in too much. This can cause spinal misalignment. However, it is an excellent choice to those looking for an enjoyable night’s sleep for less cost.
